It takes a great hero to be acknowledged as number one by his or her peers. Ranking is based on a scoring system; points are counted, among other things, by number of kills. A quick way to get points is to kill as many creatures as possible in the "Exterminate Organisms" mission (which starts in the city). There are a few sweet spots where organisms spontaneously reappear after you've killed them. Equip energy weapons with large ammunition bins, and prepare for target practice. You can use this method to get money quickly as well.
